On September 18, 2012 the Salt Lake City Council passed the Accessory Dwelling Units ordinance. Many people know Accessory Dwelling Units as “mother in law apartments” or a unit that is on a property along with a single family home. The decision to approve the ordinance followed almost three years of extensive public comment, numerous public meetings, and untold hours of work by City staff, consultants, and community volunteers.
